mountain goat. Half the world population of the endangered Nilgiri
Tahr (Hemitragas hylocres) lives here. (Around 1317, according to the
1991 census). It was declared as a sanctuary in 1975. Considering the
ecological, faunal, floral, geo-morphological and zoological
significance, it was declared as a National park in 1978. The park is

tourism area.
About 63 km from Thrissur, are located the two famous waterfalls of
Kerala, Athirapalli and Vazhchal. Just 5 km apart, on the edge of
Sholayar forest, these waterfalls offer splendid scenic beauty. After
a drop of 80 feet the Athirappalli falls joins the Chalakkudy river.
With a backdrop of thick green forest and misty waters these
waterfalls really are something not to be missed.
